    WHO to mark January 10 as Ayush Medical Coding and Records Day

    The World Health Organization’s (WHO) primary collaboration center for traditional medicine in India has announced the annual observance of “Ayush Medical Coding and Records Day” on January 10, starting in 2025. This decision was made during the 10th World Ayurveda Congress held in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, according to a statement by India’s Press Information Bureau. The initiative aims to promote the integration and standardization of traditional medical systems globally.

    WHO to mark January 10 as Ayush Medical Coding and Records Day

    The Hyderabad-based National Institute of Indian Medical Heritage (NIIMH), a WHO-affiliated center specializing in research on traditional medicine, will oversee the observance alongside the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS). The CCRAS operates under India’s Ministry of Ayush, which focuses on advancing traditional practices such as yoga, naturopathy, and ancient medical systems like ayurveda, unani, siddha, and homeopathy.

    In collaboration with NIIMH, the CCRAS will develop a roadmap to build capacity and implement the International Classification of Health Interventions in traditional medicine. This classification aims to establish a global standard for coding and documentation in the field, enhancing the credibility and accessibility of ancient medical practices worldwide.

    The annual commemoration is part of broader efforts by the Ministry of Ayush and WHO collaboration centers to promote evidence-based traditional medicine. These initiatives underscore the commitment to bridging traditional practices with modern healthcare frameworks, ensuring their sustainability and relevance in the contemporary medical landscape. The announcement further highlights India’s ongoing collaboration with the WHO in the realm of traditional medicine.

    By leveraging its expertise in ancient healing systems, India seeks to contribute to global health objectives while preserving and standardizing its rich medical heritage. The Ayush Medical Coding and Records Day will serve as a platform to raise awareness and facilitate the integration of traditional medicine within global healthcare systems.

    It is expected to foster international partnerships, encouraging the adoption of standardized practices in health records and coding across various traditional medical disciplines.
